VIENNA — At the ESCRS meeting, Jorge L. Alió, MD, PhD, received the Binkhorst Medal, an important achievement in his professional career.

His lecture was dedicated to the emerging approaches to treating the major causes of corneal blindness in the next 10 to 20 years. Corneal transplantation is still limited as a technique by the high rate of graft failure and substandard visual outcomes.

“If we had these outcomes in refractive or cataract surgery, we could not be happy. We need to look for future options,” Alió said.

Corneal regeneration will be the future, with the final goal of creating a corneal organoid customized to the patient’s needs. Regulatory and legal hurdles will be overcome by research, with the support of scientific societies, he said.
