VIENNA — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ESCRS meeting, David F. Chang, MD, speaks about operating room waste reduction through reusing materials and equipment.

Globally, 5% of carbon emissions come from the health care sector, and 71% of this is from the manufacturing, use and disposal of supplies, with the highest volume in the OR.

“When it comes to reusing things in the operating room, we have so many different layers of regulation, whether it be from the hospital or our national society regulations, that prevent us from doing that,” Chang said.

Data from the Aravind Eye Institute show that reuse is cost-effective and safe, and a new study presented here shows that out of 3,300 cultures from autoclaved reusable and other items, none were contaminated.
