Key takeaways:

  • Technological advances are allowing more people to be candidates for refractive surgery.
  • There is a transition from cornea-based to lens-based surgery.

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. — In this Healio Video Perspective from Kiawah Eye, William F. Wiley, MD, speaks about changes in the refractive surgery landscape.

“We have seen technology improve significantly, allowing for more people to be a candidate for refractive surgery, but more importantly, the people that are candidates are going to have better technology to achieve their vision goals,” he said.

In his practice and elsewhere, he has seen a transition from corneal refractive surgery to more lens-based surgery, including the ICL and trifocal IOLs, and in cornea-based surgery, SMILE is progressively expanding and overtaking LASIK and PRK.
