NEW ORLEANS — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ARVO meeting, Demetrios G. Vavvas, MD, PhD, discusses being the recipient of the 2022 Kreissig Award and the pathogenesis of photoreceptor loss after retinal detachment.
His studies were key in understanding the role of caspase-related apoptosis and the complementary pathway of RIP kinase-related necrosis. He was also the first to describe the use of minimally invasive transconjunctival therapy for complications of cataract surgery and intraocular foreign body injuries.
“We are going to put the money of this award in further understanding the molecular pathophysiology of photoreceptor loss after retinal detachment in order to have better therapies for better recovery of functional vision after retinal detachment repair,” he said.
