VIDEO: BioTissue amniotic membrane products show efficacy in restoring ocular surface

Key takeaways:

  • AmnioGraft showed successful outcomes in the treatment of pterygium and conjunctivochalasis.
  • Prokera optimizes the ocular surface before cataract surgery.

SAN DIEGO — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ASCRS meeting, Scheffer Tseng, MD, PhD, chief technology officer at BioTissue, speaks about AmnioGraft, a cryopreserved amniotic membrane graft for surface reconstruction.

The data presented at the meeting showed that this product can be used successfully to treat patients with pterygium, both primary and recurrent, and to manage dry eye caused by conjunctivochalasis.

With Prokera corneal bandages, cryopreserved amniotic membrane tissue can also be used to optimize the ocular surface before cataract surgery, allowing for more accurate biometry before premium IOL implantation.

“Within 3 to 5 days, patients have had immediate benefit on the ocular surface, whereas the benefits can last for 3 months or longer,” Tseng said.
