Key takeaways:

  • The prevalence of epithelial loosening during LASIK in patients with normal-looking corneas has increased since the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Freezing anesthetic may make it more protective of the epithelium.

In this Healio Video Perspective, Ella Faktorovich, MD, discusses employing a protocol of pH-balanced frozen proparacaine to prevent epithelial loosening among patients undergoing refractive surgery.

In her practice, Faktorovich has found greater epithelial loosening occurring among LASIK patients since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research by Brian Will, MD, has shown that using an anesthetic protocol balancing the pH in and freezing proparacaine may be more protective to the epithelium, she said.

Using this protocol in her practice, Faktorovich and colleagues have seen a reduction in epithelial loosening in refractive surgery cases.
