Key takeaways:

  • PTK-assisted epi-on cross-linking leads to selective corneal curvature changes.
  • This customized approach could be a paradigm shift in the management of keratoconus, leading to improved visual outcomes.

VILAMOURA, Portugal — At the ESCRS winter meeting, Emilio Torres-Netto, MD, PhD, speaks about the advantages of PTK-assisted customized epi-on cross-linking, or PACE.

With this second-generation customized approach, the cornea is not only regularized, but it undergoes curvature changes that improve vision.

“In a case presented here, we obtained a flattening effect of 7 D within a few weeks, which remained stable in the following months,” Torres-Netto said.

This technique could be a true paradigm shift in the management of patients with keratoconus.

“If we have a patient with cataract and keratoconus, we could first improve the cornea with PACE and then calculate the IOL more precisely and even use a toric IOL,” he said.
