MONTEREY, Calif. — Because she “cold called” experts early in her career, Adrienne Graves, PhD, developed relationships that she now attributes to helping her achieve success as chairman of the board of Iveric Bio.

“Relationships really are the key to everything,” Adrienne Graves, PhD, said at the Women in Ophthalmology Summer Symposium. “Make connections and then keep up those connections.”

At the time, Graves reached out to the top glaucoma specialists in the U.S. because she was naïve to the field.

“I was a total nobody, but they all returned my calls. And many of them are my friends to this day,” Graves said. “They created opportunities for me, introduced me to others [and] taught me glaucoma, and it was one of the things that helped propel my career.”

Those relationships, once established, can open doors to opportunity, as these have for Graves, who also sits on the corporate board for Nicox, Surface Ophthalmics, Oxurion, TherOptix, Qlaris and Greenbrook TMS.

“It’s so important to be open to opportunities that may not fit what you thought was your perfect plan,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help or to tell people what you want.”
