Small-aperture IOL performs well in post-RK eyes over 5 years

MILAN — In a series of complex post-radial keratotomy eyes, the small-aperture IOL from AcuFocus resulted in good unaided vision and increased depth of focus.

According to a poster presented by Gabriel Quesada, MD, and co-authors at the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons meeting, “all patients had a significant decrease in their self-reported symptoms of glare and halos.”

In eyes with previous radial keratotomy (RK), cataract surgery is challenging in terms of accurate IOL power calculation and prediction of refractive outcomes. In addition, advanced-technology IOLs are usually contraindicated, as they might exacerbate symptoms such as halos and glare.

In a prospective, consecutive series of 23 eyes of 15 patients with prior RK, cataract surgery with implantation of the small-aperture IOL, now called the IC-8 Apthera, was performed. Results were evaluated over 5 years of follow-up.

Throughout the postoperative period, uncorrected visual acuity was stable, and at 5 years, it was 20/30 or better at distance and intermediate and 20/40 or better at near.

“The combination of prior RK and small-aperture IOL allowed excellent clinical examination of the retina and fundus photography documentation,” the authors wrote.
