Diffractive-refractive IOL shows improvement in distance vision, glare and halos at 6 months

PRAGUE Six-month results with the OptiVis diffractive-refractive multifocal IOL show improvement in distance visual acuity and decrease in glare and halos compared with 3-month results, according to one surgeon here.
"Mean distance vision improved by one line, and the number of patients who complained of mild halos and glare at 3 months were reduced by half," Magda Rau, MD, said at the winter meeting of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. Between October 2009 and May 2010, Dr. Rau implanted the OptiVis lens (Aaren Scientific) bilaterally in 24 patients. She said the lens is particularly good for intermediate vision, which is a weak point with most multifocal lenses.
"This is due to the combination of diffractive and refractive optics that provides a continuous focus from distance through intermediate to near for all pupil sizes," Dr. Rau said.
Intermediate vision in her series of patients remained stable at approximately 20/25 between 3 months and 6 months. A slight decrease of half a line in near vision was reported.
Patient satisfaction was strictly correlated with spectacle independence, which was achieved by 58% of the patients.
"These patients also reported a positive improvement in night vision between 3 and 6 months," Dr. Rau said.
