VIDEO: Gonorrhea vaccine trial nears full enrollment

BOSTON — In this video, Jodie A. Dionne, MD, MSPH, associate professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, recaps her IDWeek presentation on vaccines and sexually transmitted infections.
There are currently no licensed vaccines for the three nationally reportable STIs — chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis — but that could change depending on the results of a large randomized controlled trial assessing the ability of the meningococcal B vaccine Bexsero (GSK) to offer cross-protection against gonorrhea.
In 2017, researchers in New Zealand were the first to report that a meningitis B vaccine might prevent gonorrhea.
According to Dionne, who is running the NIH trial now at UAB, they have enrolled more than 1,500 of the targeted 2,200 participants.
In the video above, Dionne provides an update on when they expect to have results.
“There’s a lot of momentum building that will continue to build beyond this study, looking at other gonococcal vaccine candidates and moving toward a protective syphilis vaccine, and even chlamydia,” Dionne said. “It’s the right time to be in the field.”
