VIDEO: ‘With everything else going on,’ do not forget about arboviruses
WASHINGTON — In this video interview, Karen M. Krueger, MD, assistant professor of infectious diseases at Northwestern Medicine, talks about the WHO’s Global Arbovirus Initiative, which launched earlier this year.
The purpose of the program is to increase preparedness for future epidemics and even pandemics of emerging and re-emerging arboviruses.
Infections like chikungunya, dengue, Zika and yellow fever — spread by Aedes aegypti mosquitos — affect billions of people in tropical and subtropical climates, Krueger noted. A combination of factors, such as increasing travel and climate change, could allow arboviruses to gain a foothold in nonendemic areas.
“As infectious disease physicians, it’s important to keep these important viruses in mind, especially those of us who practice in areas where these viruses are not endemic,” Krueger said.
