Jame Abraham, MD, director of the breast oncology program at Cleveland Clinic, spoke with Healio about recent advances in the management of metastatic breast cancer.

- real-world use of front-line therapy with new CDK4/6 inhibitors for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer;
- “exciting” clinical trial data on HER2-positive breast cancer treatments, including neratinib (Nerlynx, Puma Biotechnology), tucatinib (ONT-380, Cascadian Therapeutics) and DS-8201 (Daiichi Sankyo);
- the importance of genetic screening to identify patients who are eligible for new effective treatment options, such as atezolizumab (Tecentriq, Genentech Inc.) for PD-L1 positive, triple-negative metastatic breast cancer;
- progress toward incorporating liquid biopsy into routine clinical care; and
- the need for all oncologists to reconsider chemotherapy in patients with ER-positive breast cancer and indications of metastatic disease.
