VIDEO: Risk-reducing surgeries result in ‘fewer breast cancer events’ for BRCA carriers

SAN ANTONIO — In this video, Halle Moore, MD, discusses the results of a study investigating the link between surgery and outcomes among patients with breast cancer presented at San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

The international cohort study evaluated patients under the age of 40 diagnosed with BRCA1 or BRCA2 pathogenic mutations and the association between risk-reducing surgeries and outcomes, such as survival.

“[Women] who underwent risk-reducing surgery — whether it be bilateral mastectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, or the combination — had better survival and fewer breast cancer events,” Moore, a medical oncologist and director of the breast oncology program at Cleveland Clinic, said.
