Women in Oncology honors National Women Physicians Day

Fact checked byMindy Valcarcel, MS

Saturday, Feb. 3, is the 9th annual National Women Physicians Day — a day that honors female physicians breaking barriers in the field of medicine.

National Women Physicians Day commemorates the birthday of Elizabeth Blackwell, MD, the first American woman to earn a medical degree in 1849. Blackwell’s trailblazing efforts paved the way for female physicians to follow.

According to the AMA, “this observance underscores the importance of fostering gender diversity and equitable opportunities in the medical profession, ensuring that the legacy of pioneering women physicians endures. National Women Physicians Day serves as a reminder of the significant impact that female doctors have on advancing health care and enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities.”

Women in Oncology salutes all women in the field who continue to inspire others by shattering barriers and identifying solutions to the challenges facing health care today.

We want to specifically acknowledge and show our appreciation to the women who provide our platform with a constant guiding light. Our Peer Perspective Board, under the leadership of Consulting Medical Editor, Shikha Jain, MD, FACP, has made Women in Oncology what it is today — thank you for all that you do.
