Damon Reed, MD, has been appointed inaugural head of the division of pediatric solid tumors at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Reed also will serve as chief of the pediatric sarcoma service at MSK Kids, Memorial Sloan Kettering’s pediatric cancer program.
Reed has dedicated his career to treating children, adolescents and young adults with cancer.
“The world-class team at MSK is thrilled to welcome Dr. Reed to the institution,” Andrew Kung, MD, PhD, chair of the department of pediatrics, said in a press release. “His expertise and compassion in treating children, adolescents and young adults with cancer, combined with a robust translational research background, will set him up for success as the first-ever head of the division of pediatric solid tumors.”
Reed previously served as chair of the department of individualized cancer management and director of the adolescent and young adult program at Moffitt Cancer Center. He also founded the Sunshine Project, the Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s pediatric phase 1 clinical trial consortium.
He is recognized for his work advancing sarcoma clinical research.
His research has focused on characterizing mechanisms of therapeutic resistance. His current work is evaluating optimal approaches to therapeutic combinations and sequencing. He also is evaluating the potential of predictive testing to support personalized therapy in sarcoma and other rare malignancies.
“I chose this field to make a difference for the extraordinary and inspiring young people I care for, who want and deserve better therapies,” Reed said in the release. “I am excited to join the world-renowned team at MSK as we work together to provide state-of-the-art and compassionate care for MSK’s young patients.”
