Today is Glioblastoma Awareness Day.

The annual observance is intended to raise awareness about the importance of finding a cure for the disease, the most aggressive form of brain cancer. It also honors patients, families and caregivers, as well as the clinicians and researchers who are committed to helping those with glioblastoma.

In conjunction with the observance, Healio provides the following eight research updates in glioblastoma and other brain tumors.

1. The combination of intratumoral DNX-2401 (DNAtrix) and pembrolizumab (Keytruda, Merck) appeared safe and provided “notable survival benefits” for select patients with recurrent glioblastoma, researchers wrote in Nature Medicine. Read more.

2. Vorasidenib (Servier) significantly improved PFS while delaying time to next intervention among certain patients with grade 2 isocitrate dehydrogenase 1- or 2-mutant glioma. Read more.

3. The addition of disulfiram and copper to chemotherapy did not result in a significant survival benefit for patients with recurrent glioblastoma. The combination also appeared associated with significantly increased toxic effects compared with chemotherapy alone. Read more.

4. The use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound with concomitant administration of IV microbubbles may improve the delivery of albumin-bound paclitaxel and carboplatin through the blood-brain barrier. Read more.

5. An artificial intelligence algorithm that uses computational analysis may help identify possible therapeutic targets for glioblastoma multiforme and other types of cancer. Read more.

6. Researchers developed an implantable, pressurized pump to circumvent the blood-brain barrier and direct chemotherapy to recurrent glioblastoma tumors. Read more.

7. The addition of an autologous tumor lysate-loaded dendritic vaccine (DCVax-L, Northwest Therapeutics) to standard care extended OS among certain patients with glioblastoma, according to phase 3 trial results. Read more.

8. The addition of interferon alfa to temozolomide significantly extended survival among patients with newly diagnosed high-grade gliomas. Read more.
