Community oncologists who received peer coaching from cancer genetics experts more frequently ordered genetic testing for their patients, according to study results.

Additional support is necessary to ensure genetic testing is offered to all patients who meet criteria, researchers concluded.

Investigators also identified several strategies that could help realize the benefits of precision oncology strategies for patients who seek treatment at community cancer centers. These include standardization of efforts to gather patients’ personal and family histories of cancer, the need to review biomarker data that may suggest hereditary cancer syndrome, and the value of advocating for universal coverage for genetic testing.

Healio spoke with Marianne E. Dubard-Gault, MD, MS, medical director of the cancer genetics program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and assistant professor at University of Washington School of Medicine, about the findings and their potential implications.
