Haptoglobin gene expression in the blood appeared associated with anthracycline-related cardiomyopathy among childhood cancer survivors, according to study results.
The findings provide insights into the role genetic variants associated with haptoglobin RNA levels have in anthracycline-related cardiac dysfunction, as well as a potential mechanistic explanation for the role of oxidative damage caused by exposure to anthracyclines, researchers wrote.
Healio spoke with Purnima Singh, MS, PHD, MSPH, associate professor in the division of pediatric hematology-oncology at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, about the findings and their potential implications.
