Cumulative anesthesia exposure linked to impaired neurocognitive function in pediatric ALL

NEW ORLEANS — Cumulative anesthesia exposure appeared associated with impairments in neurocognitive function among children with high-risk acute lymphoblastic leukemia, according to study results presented at ASH Annual Meeting and Exposition.

Because anesthesia exposure is a modifiable risk, opportunities to minimize use — when feasible — for this patient population should be considered, researchers concluded.

Healio spoke with Mignon H. Loh, MD, chief of the division of pediatric hematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy at Seattle Children's, as well as professor of pediatrics at University of Washington, about the study results and their potential implications.
