In this video, Andrew Ciupek, PhD, spoke with Healio about non-treatment-related presentations from at the World Conference on Lung Cancer.

“I’m also really pleased to see that, in addition to all the treatment-based clinical trials, one of the things the World Conference does well is there were a lot of presentations with a wide range of issues that affect the lung cancer community,” Ciupek, associate director of clinical research at GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, said.

He highlighted a study that looked at the serologic response to COVID-19 vaccination in patients with lung cancer. The findings demonstrated a similar protective response in patients with lung cancer compared with healthy controls.

Another study enumerated the lasting effects lung cancer and treatment has on the sexual health of women.

Ciupek also noted two surveys aimed at understanding and improving patient advocacy in the lung cancer space. The Global Coalition of Lung Cancer conducted an online patient survey to understand patient experiences of care during the COVID-19 pandemic and preferences moving forward, while the survey from Lung Cancer Europe focused on patient quality of life.

Moreover, LUNGevity presented an audit of clinical trial enrollment that found the way in which informed consent forms are written creates a barrier for some patients, and data from the GO2 Foundation showed the importance of improving education for patients with small cell cancer, as well as other targeted outreach.

“I really encourage people to check out these works to really think about how to take patient perspective into account as we provide care to our patients,” Ciupek concluded.
