Mayo Clinic ranked No. 1 hospital for diabetes, endocrinology

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was once again ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the No. 1 hospital in the country for diabetes and endocrinology, according to its 2021-2022 Best Hospitals rankings.

The latest edition also includes seven new “procedures and conditions” ratings for hospitals to emphasize targeted research and care: myocardial infarction, stroke, pneumonia, diabetes, kidney failure, hip fracture and back surgery (spinal fusion). Hospitals received one of three ratings: high performing, average or below average; hospitals that earned a high performing rating were substantially better than the national average.

“This year’s expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help patients, in consultation with their doctors, narrow down their choice of hospital based on the specific type of care they need,” Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis, said in a press release.

The top five U.S. hospitals for diabetes and endocrinology according to the 2021-2022 Best Hospitals rankings are these:

  1. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota;
  2. Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston;
  3. UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles;
  4. NYU Langone Hospitals, New York; and
  5. New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell, New York.

The data used in the 2020-2021 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings come from a period predating the COVID-19 pandemic and were not affected by the pandemic’s impact on hospitals, according to the release. The U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals methodologies are based largely on objective measures, such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

In addition, Mayo Clinic was ranked No. 1 in the U.S. News & World Report 2020-2021 Best Hospitals Honor Roll for the sixth consecutive year. Cleveland Clinic was ranked No. 2 and UCLA Medical Center was ranked No. 3. The Honor Roll is a distinction awarded to hospitals ranked in the top 20 nationally for delivering exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care. The rankings are produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
