In this video perspective, Yehuda Handelsman, MD, FACP, FNLA, FASPC, MACE, offers a review of the Evolving Concepts in the Management of Diabetes and Cardiorenal Metabolic Diseases workshop, held June 18 to 19 in Dallas.

Handelsman, an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member, is the medical director and principal investigator of the Metabolic Institute of America in Tarzana, California, and chair of the task force that organized the workshop.

He told Healio that the goal of the meeting was to develop practice recommendations for multispecialty management of the patient with diabetes and cardiorenal metabolic diseases.

“This has never been done before,” Handelsman said. The 2-day workshop included 20 presentations and debate among clinical experts on topics such as hypercalcemia, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, vaccinations, inflammation and cardiovascular disease.

The next step, Handelsman said, is to gather select members of the task force from each specialty to develop a consensus statement on best practices. A paper detailing the recommendations will be published in a peer-review journal later this year.
