In this video exclusive, Robert H. Eckel, MD, professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology, metabolism, diabetes and cardiology, Charles A. Boettcher II Chair in Atherosclerosis at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Center and director of the lipid clinic at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, argues for a formal training program in cardiometabolic medicine following an internal medicine residency.

The new specialty would encompass metabolic aspects of endocrinology and preventive cardiology to care for an increasing population of patients with obesity, type 2 diabetes and heart disease
