Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia ranked top US hospital for pediatric diabetes, endocrinology

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was once again named the No. 1 hospital in the country for pediatric diabetes and endocrinology by the U.S. News & World Report 2019-2020 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.

According to a press release from U.S. News & World Report, the Best Children’s Hospitals methodology measures patient outcomes, including mortality and infection rates, as well as available clinical resources and compliance with best practices.

“This distinction reflects our commitment to consistently providing excellent, evidence-based and personalized care to children with diabetes and endocrine disorders,” Diva D. De León-Crutchlow, MD, MSCE, chief of the division of endocrinology and diabetes center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), told Endocrine Today. “Within the division of endocrinology and diabetes, we strive to solve the most challenging problems in pediatric endocrinology through discovery, translation and implementation of novel therapies. At CHOP, no condition is viewed as too rare, and our goal is to not only care for the patient, but provide support for the entire family.”

The list ranked 50 centers in 10 pediatric specialties:

  • cancer;
  • cardiology and heart surgery;
  • diabetes and endocrinology;
  • gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery;
  • neonatology;
  • nephrology;
  • neurology and neurosurgery;
  • orthopedics;
  • pulmonology and lung surgery; and
  • urology.

The top-ranked hospitals for pediatric diabetes and endocrine care in the 2019-2020 report are:

  • Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia;
  • Boston Children’s Hospital;
  • Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital;
  • Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center;
  • UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh;
  • Children’s Hospital Colorado;
  • Texas Children’s Hospital;
  • Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford; and
  • Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Boston Children’s Hospital topped the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, which honors institutions that “deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties,” according to the release.

“While health care is rapidly changing, the objective of U.S. News Best Children’s Hospitals remains the same: Provide families with a comprehensive and trusted starting point as they, in consultation with their doctors and other medical professionals, search for the pediatric care they need,” Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News & World Report, said in the release. “Our rankings, now in their 13th year, have always put parents and young patients at the front and center of our mission.”
