NEW ORLEANS — In this video exclusive, Kristien Boelaert, MD, PHD, of the University of Birmingham in the U.K., discusses the findings of a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial comparing the effects of levothyroxine on birth rates in women with thyroid peroxidase antibodies and normal thyroid function as well as a history of infertility or miscarriage.

The trial was conducted in 952 women who were recruited from across 49 centers in the U.K. Participating women were randomly assigned to levothyroxine or placebo before conception.

According to the results, which were made based on visits 28 days postpartum, levothyroxine did not lead to significant differences in live birth rates, pregnancy rates or pregnancy outcomes such as pregnancy loss or preterm birth.
