NEW ORLEANS — In this video exclusive, Sangeeta Kashyap, MD, associate professor of medicine at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and staff physician in the department of endocrinology at Cleveland Clinic, discusses the metabolic benefits of bariatric surgery.

Kashyap, who chaired a symposium on bariatric surgery featuring three speakers at the Endocrine Society Annual Meeting, said it is important to remember that weight loss after bariatric surgery or nonsurgical therapies can vary between patients.

“There is variability in the amount of weight patients will lose, and a lot of this has to do with the fact that obesity is a very complex disease and it is not about a patient’s willpower,” Kashyap said.

Kashyap said bariatric surgery changes the physiology of appetite, including feeding behaviors and preference for foods, due to hormonal changes that follow surgery.

Bone parameters should also be monitored after bariatric surgery, and adequate vitamin supplementation is also very important, she said.
