FDA clears glucose monitor for smartphone
The FDA has approved a digital health system that includes a smart, portable blood glucose monitor that integrates with a user’s smartphone and in-app coaching, according to a press release from POPS! Diabetes Care.
The POPS! one Blood Glucose Monitoring System, according to the company, is designed to enable people with diabetes to more easily manage their condition. The system includes a smart blood glucose monitor with built-in needles and sensor that can connect to the back of a user’s smartphone and provide instant blood sugar readings, along with in-app coaching and a cloud-based platform. People who use the system are also able to review their blood sugar trends and share information with family or health care professionals. The POPS! glucose monitor does not need to be physically connected to a phone to monitor glucose.
“We are thrilled to have successfully worked with the FDA to clear this novel solution for people with diabetes,” Lonny Stormo, CEO of POPS! Diabetes Care, said in the release. “POPS! is delivering a simple experience to help people take action to achieve their goals.”
The POPS! Diabetes Care digital health platform is also designed to encourage testing frequency, sending reminders to users. The company is preparing for commercialization of the device in early 2019.
