VIDEO: Improved thyroid cancer registry provides clearer demographic findings

WASHINGTON — In this video exclusive, Stephanie Lee, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Thyroid Health Center, section of endocrinology, diabetes and nutrition at Boston Medical Center, and Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member, discusses research aimed at creating a more up-to-date and demographically diverse thyroid cancer registry.
Lee explains that the current registries are generally obsolete due to the absence of several predictors for recurrence and death. Since those older registries cannot be updated, Lee and colleagues enrolled more than 12,000 patients to their registry, with roughly 40% identifying as non-white. Lee details how the data from the study provides evidence that a lack of care in large populations is a larger cause of high stage at diagnosis and poor treatment response than intrinsic or racial characteristics.
