The Helmsley Charitable Trust is providing the American Association of Diabetes Educators with a $2.6 million grant to be used for its new technology-based resource Diabetes Advanced Network Access, or DANA, according to a press release from AADE.

“During the formation of the 2016-2018 AADE Strategic Plan, the Board of Directors identified the need to leverage technology and the connected health environment to empower diabetes educators to expand innovative self-management support for people with diabetes,” Gina Tassio McClure, chief operating officer of AADE, told Endocrine Today. “We took that very broad need out to the AADE membership and various thought leaders and gathered data through surveys, summits and focus groups. The results pointed to DANA — a single, one-stop platform that would bring together up-to-date information on diabetes technology, devices and consumer apps, on-demand training and advanced educational coursework, and evidence-based resources and tools.”

DANA is meant to simplify diabetes educators’ ability to tailor treatment plans to individual patient needs by centralizing the most-up-to-date resources and information related to diabetes-care, according to the release.

More specifically, five elements combine to build DANA: a product clearing house, which provides information on more than 200 products; education, which allows for continued learning through live courses and webinars; innovation, which consists of the latest technology-related news; resources, which provide educators easy access to peer-reviewed publications, guidelines and tools; and, finally, app review, which supplies information and custom reviews on apps related to diabetes management, fitness, food, lifestyle, wellness, blood pressure and depression.

“DANA has been designed for health care professionals, but in the future, I would like to see AADE adapt DANA to launch a related platform for people with or affected by diabetes,” McClure said. “I’ve seen firsthand the power of engaged and empowered individuals coming together with diabetes educators and other health care providers to improve health outcomes for themselves and their communities; DANA would be a great hub for that continued collaboration.”

DANA, free for AADE members, can be accessed at DANAtech.org.

“We’re in a unique moment in health care; technology has the potential to impact health, wellness and peace of mind for people with diabetes like never before,” McClure added. – by Melissa J. Webb
