The Endocrine Society, George Washington University and the Consulate General of Peru will be holding an outreach event and health fair on Saturday to educate the local expatriate and immigrant communities about diabetes, according to a press release from the Endocrine Society.

The health fair will be held at the Consular Office at 1125 23rd Street, NW, Washington, D.C., on November 18 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The event is free and open to the public.

“It is a privilege to partner with the Endocrine Society on this important public health initiative,” Deputy Consul Jose Miguel Nieto Frias said in the release. “The health fair offers opportunities for our citizens to interact directly with experts in the field.”

This event is the first time the Endocrine Society’s global outreach program will host an event in the United States. The award-winning EndoCares program was launched in Peru 2016 with a 2-day program for health care providers and individuals with diabetes.

The event will feature handouts on healthy Peruvian recipes and exercise demonstrations by physical therapy students from George Washington University.

“We are thrilled to give back and educate area residents about preventing and managing diabetes,” Nicole Eherhardt, MD, of George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a volunteer staffing the health fair, said in the release. “Hispanic adults are 1.7 times more likely than Caucasian adults to be diagnosed with diabetes. We want to empower everyone to understand his or her individual risk factors and suggest ways to adopt healthy habits.”
