VIDEO: Guidelines needed for treatment of genitourinary syndrome of menopause in breast cancer survivors
PHILADELPHIA — Sheryl A. Kingsberg, PhD, president-elect of the North American Menopause Society, discusses her main goal for her upcoming presidency — treatment of genitourinary syndrome of menopause in survivors of breast cancer.
According to Kingsberg, of 64 million postmenopausal women, roughly 32 million have vulvovaginal atrophy. The condition remains undiagnosed and therefore untreated in the approximately 250,000 breast cancer survivors, many of whom are younger than the average age of menopause.
“The fact that so many of the women are suffering from pain with sexual activity and have no approved treatments is something that we’re working on to, at least, establish some guidelines so that clinicians can feel more comfortable treating them,” Kingsberg said.
