VIDEO: Mobile technology valuable option for diabetes education
INDIANAPOLIS — In this video exclusive, Endocrine Today Diabetes in Real Life columnist Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDE, CDN, discusses telehealth with Deborah A. Greenwood, PhD, RN, BC-ADM, CDE, FAADE, 2015 AADE president and currently chief digital research officer for diabetes for Mytonomy.
“Telehealth” is a broad term referring to everything from traditional telemedicine consultations that occur face-to-face in real time, to remote monitoring of data used to make health decisions, to newer digital apps connecting people to coaches. Greenwood and colleagues performed a systematic review of technology-enabled diabetes self-management studies conducted from 2011 to 2017. They found that mobile technology use was associated with decreased HbA1c when it incorporated four key elements: using two-way communication, incorporating patient-generated data, then tailoring education to the patient, and providing feedback to inform changes in behavior, Greenwood said.
The review can be downloaded free during the month of August (Greenwood DA, et al. J Diabetes Sci Technol. 2017;doi.10.1177/1932296817713506).
