INDIANAPOLIS — In this video exclusive, Endocrine Today Diabetes in Real Life columnist Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDE, CDN, speaks with Tom Karlya, vice president of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation and well-known as Diabetes Dad in the online diabetes community, about their presentation on the missed diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. Weiner and Karlya are working to raise awareness of the symptoms of type 1 diabetes that may appear in children so that a diagnosis can be made before a child presents with diabetic ketoacidosis.

“It’s so simple,” Karlya said. “A simple blood test and we’re done.”

Karlya recommends that diabetes educators interested in spreading information about missed diagnosis contact the organization Beyond Type 1 for posters, flyers and other materials.
