VIDEO: Heart failure most deadly complication of type 2 diabetes
PHILADELPHIA — In this video exclusive, Mikhail Kosiborod, MD, FACC, FAHA, professor of medicine at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a conference co-chair, discusses the intersection of diabetes, prediabetes and heart failure.
According to Kosiborod, the survival rate in older patients with heart failure may be as poor as less than 25% in 5 years, so effective treatments and treatment strategies are need to both prevent and effectively manage heart failure, particularly in those with preexisting type 2 diabetes.
SGLT2 inhibitors may be effective and have been shown to potentially prevent heart failure in patients with diabetes and improve a number of other important cardiovascular outcomes.
“They are being actively studied in patients with established heart failure in multiple clinical trials, including several large outcome trials,” Kosiborod said.
