ORLANDO, Fla. — In this video exclusive, Maria Fleseriu, MD, FACE, professor of medicine and neurological surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, discusses updates in the management of acromegaly.
According to Fleseriu, acromegaly continues to be diagnosed late, and patients present with large tumors. In most cases, surgery remains the first line of treatment, but in patients with larger tumors, medical management is also required.
Radiation may also be necessary in some patients as a third line of therapy. Medical therapies can work at both the pituitary and growth hormone levels to adequately manage the disease.
Fleseriu noted that there are also several drugs in development which may help to improve patients’ quality of life.
