VIDEO: Bone screens still necessary in type 2 diabetes despite normal, high BMD

ORLANDO, Fla. — In this video exclusive, Ann V. Schwartz, PhD, MPH, associate professor, department of epidemiology and biostatistics at theUniversity of California, San Francisco, discusses when it is appropriate to treat people with type 2 diabetes for osteoporosis despite most of this population having normal or higher bone density compared with people without diabetes.

Schwartz said it is still important to screen older adults with type 2 diabetes to determine bone mineral density and whether pharmacologic treatment is necessary.

“My recommendation with type 2 diabetes is there’s definitely a need to screen with DXA, just like you would for other patients,” she said. “You can’t assume that your individual, particular patient had a higher bone density T-score [because they have diabetes].”
