Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly have launched an educational initiative to encourage people with type 2 diabetes to talk to their health care providers and loved ones about their risk for cardiovascular disease, according to a press release from the companies.

A recent survey conducted by the companies found that people with type 2 diabetes spend 1000% more time planning for Valentine’s Day than they spend talking to their doctor about diabetes. Only 20% of people talk to their loved one with type 2 diabetes about their health risks on a regular basis, according to the survey.

Because CVD is the leading cause of death for people with diabetes, Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly created the For Your SweetHeart campaign to encourage conversations about CVD risk for people with type 2 diabetes around Valentine’s Day.

“People with diabetes are two to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes,” said Mike Mason, vice president of US Lilly Diabetes. “Educating the public about this important health crisis is just another component of our responsibility and commitment to delivering the best care for people with type 2 diabetes. We hope this initiative will encourage people to take action, not only for themselves, but also for their sweethearts.”

The education campaign offers a quiz for people to assess their CVD risk and resources on how to talk with a health care provider. Find it at www.foryoursweetheart.com.
