ADA launches initiative, petition for affordable insulin
In response to the rising cost of insulin, the American Diabetes Association announced a resolution and petition that calls for transparency in the insulin supply chain in order to ensure that insulin is affordable for those who need it, according to a press release.
The ADA is also calling for Congress to facilitate a meeting to discover the reasons behind the price increase and to take action for affordability of this necessary therapy for people with diabetes.
A recent study in JAMA showed that the cost of insulin tripled between 2002 and 2013.
“No one in need of lifesaving insulin should ever go without it due to prohibitive costs,” Desmond Schatz, MD, president of medicine and science at ADA said. “We call on Congress and all those involved in the insulin supply chain to solve this crisis and to protect the millions of Americans who need insulin to stay alive. We also invite all Americans to join us in taking action by signing our petition.”
