DENVER — Yuri Nikiforov, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, dicsusses a new entity in thyroid pathology — noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm.

According to Nikiforov, many thyroid cancers have a very low potential for malignancy but are still referred to as “cancers,” falsely implying that they need treatment and may cause patient stress.

Nikiforov organized a working group to look into NIFTP and found minimal risk for patients when tumors are noninvasive.
