AACE opening ceremony marks 25 years of growth, achievements

ORLANDO, Fla. — It was 25 years ago when “a handful of dreamers” organized what would become the first American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress, designed with the goal of putting the needs and interests of endocrinologists and their patients first.

That mission, AACE President George Grunberger, MD, FACP, FACE, said, continues on today, with a focus on continued renewal and growth.

“When I joined AACE, I recognized immediately that there were unique benefits to being a member,” Grunberger said during the meeting’s opening ceremony. “But realistically, it wasn’t until last year, when I was sworn in [as president of AACE], that I realized how important, recognized and relevant AACE is to all of our practitioners and our patients.

The real secret behind the success of AACE is the support of family and friends — including those outside of endocrinology who helped get the organization off the ground, said Yank D. Coble Jr., MD, FACP, FACE, who served as president of AACE from 1992 to 1993. It is also important, Coble added, to remember to have fun.

“We bring our families here, we encourage the children to come, spouses to come, and they have,” Coble said. “It’s always been a delightful meeting in so many different ways. Family, friends and fun have been critical parts, and we’re going to continue those traditions.”

This year’s meeting, Grunberger said, will have a “slightly different footprint” than past events. The meeting oversight committee, chaired by Felice Caldarella, MD, FACE, FACP, CDE, worked to improve overall quality this year without sacrificing CME hours.

“From exhibit halls to private theaters, in-depth symposia, plenaries, meet-the-expert sessions, satellite symposia, as well as all of the planned social events, the next 4 days will provide a plethora of science, the latest in technology and clinical pearls ... that endocrinologists can offer,” Grunberger said. “And, hopefully, time to renew old friendships and make new acquaintances.”

“I don’t need to tell you what a monumental task it is to put together such a high-quality program,” said Grunberger, who extended his appreciation to the entire AACE program committee for their work.

The future success of AACE, Coble said, is rooted in the enthusiasm and optimism of its members.

“It’s those people and those organizations that continue to have relevance, be responsive and be capable of continued renewal,” Coble said. “And our organization has had those characteristics for a long time.” – by Regina Schaffer
