VIDEO: Statins, targeting BP may help reduce CV risks in type 2 diabetes

BOSTON — In this video exclusive, Naveed Sattar, PhD, FRCP, FRCPath, professor of metabolic medicine at the University of Glasgow, discusses his presentation on the effect of statins and lowering blood pressure on cardiovascular risk factors in type 2 diabetes.

According to Sattar, statins have substantial benefits in patients with type 2 diabetes and anyone with type 2 diabetes who is older than 40 years should be on a statin.

“Statins and BP reduction are really important in the vast majority of patients with type 2 diabetes, and if anything, the evidence suggests that to lower CV risks, targeting blood pressure and LDL cholesterol will have more profound and more rapid benefits than glucose reduction,” Sattar said.
