LOS ANGELES — Patients with obesity and prediabetes who lose weight can regain normal blood glucose levels, according to Carel le Roux, MBChB, MSC, FRCP, FRCPath, PhD, in a video interview. Le Roux presented data from the SCALE prediabetes study at ObesityWeek 2015.

In the trial, significantly fewer patients with obesity and prediabetes who were assigned liraglutide for weight loss went on to develop diabetes over the next 3 years, compared with patients assigned placebo, and about 70% of those patients returned to normal glycemic levels.

“It’s not only about weight loss, it’s also about health gain,” said le Roux.

Recent advancements in weight reduction therapies, including lifestyle approaches, pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery, not only help patients lose weight and become healthier, but help reduce the costs of obesity on national health care systems.
