PHILADELPHIA — Anuja Dokras, MD, PhD, director of the PENN Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Center in the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, explains that the name polycystic ovary syndrome does not appropriately describe the condition.

Women with PCOS do not, in fact, have ovarian cysts, and the name has shifted emphasis from other issues associated with the condition, including hypertension, diabetes, weight concerns and high cholesterol, according to Dokras.

Health care providers and patients are invited to take a survey about renaming PCOS, conducted by the Androgen Excess and PCOS Society, available at http://tinyurl.com/n6g4d4c.
