College Diabetes Network, ADA partner for 'Off to College' guide

The College Diabetes Network, with support from the American Diabetes Association will launch a “how-to” guide with the goal of better supporting incoming college students who have diabetes, according to an association press release.

The College Diabetes Network’s (CDN) effort, “Organizing an ‘Off to College’ Event: A How-to Guide,” is designed to increase the number of diabetes awareness events aimed at young adults. The ADA reviewed the content of the guide, which is supported by a grant from Lilly to CDN.

The guide, designed to make the events more productive and successful, includes information on how to organize an “Off to College” event on a budget, tips on where to find funding to host an event, handouts for attendees, suggested topics to cover and template budgets. Free copies of the guide are available by filling out a form on the CDN website. The goal, according to CDN, is to increase the quality and number of these types of events.

“We feel that CDN has filled a gap and provided much-needed resources and support for students,” Jane Chiang, MD, senior vice president, medical and community affairs for the ADA, said in a statement. “The College Diabetes Network's ‘Organizing an Off to College Event’ transition guide is the perfect example of a tool that can help to reach these young adults with support they need to make the best decisions possible about their health. The association is excited to have the opportunity to support this tool.”

CDN, founded in 2009, aims to help young adults juggle college and living with diabetes by providing peer support and access to diabetes information and resources.

Christina Roth, CEO and Founder of the College Diabetes Network, said in a statement that support from the ADA allows CDN to reach a much larger number of young adults with diabetes and their families.

“Collaboration has always been a guiding principle of CDN, and we look forward to the impact both we and the association can have by leveraging each of our strengths,” Roth said.
