Diabetes educators meet, share expertise at AADE 2014 in Orlando

Starting on Wednesday, August 6, Endocrine Today and Healio.com/Endocrinology will offer live coverage from the American Association of Diabetes Educators Annual Meeting & Exhibition, including coverage of expert panels, exhibits, symposia and special sessions along with video interviews with the experts.
The 4-day meeting features the theme “Refresh. Recharge. Renew.” and certified diabetes educators from around the country will meet to compare notes, share new data, deliver technology updates and discuss certification maintenance.
The conference will kick off on Wednesday, August 6, with a look at the future of health care reform with Jonathan Oberlander, PhD, followed by an update on AADE’s role in the national Diabetes Prevention Program by Joanna Craver, BS, MNM, diabetes prevention program manager for AADE. Meghan Jardine, MS, MBA, RD, LD, CDE, RDN, will later lead a session on the role gut microbiota may play in diabetes.
On Thursday, Jardine will also review the nutritional adequacy of popular diets. Michelle Magee, MD, CDE, director of the MedStar Diabetes Institute, will present on the role of the diabetes educator amid a changing national health care environment, and an expert panel will speak on delivering supporting care for young adults with diabetes.
A panel on Friday will review new internet and mobile technologies that could aid in diabetes management, and Pat Rafferty, PharmD, RPh, CDE, of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, will address pain management in diabetic neuropathy.
Other topics of discussion will include improving patient-educator communication through clear language, organizing care models for patient education, exercise and diabetes, guideline comparisons and shared decision-making.
