Abbott has announced a voluntary recall of its FreeStyle and FreeStyle Flash blood glucose meters, stating they may produce erroneous low blood glucose results, according to an FDA press release. The company began notifying users of the issue on Feb. 19, 2014.

Models affected by the recall include the OmniPod Insulin Management System with the built-in FreeStyle blood glucose meter.

Anyone using any of the affected models is advised by Abbott to immediately discontinue use of the machine and contact the company to obtain a replacement meter.

If patients do not have access to another meter, Abbott suggests they continue to use the model to test blood glucose while waiting for a replacement meter.

Users of the OmniPod Insulin Management System with the built-in FreeStyle blood glucose meter are advised by Abbott to follow the recommended actions at https://www.abbottdiabetescare.com/press-room/2014/2014-b.html.
