AACE/ACE to hold international obesity conference

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and American College of Endocrinologists will hold a two-day obesity conference next month in an effort to improve the prevalence of obesity, according to a joint press release issued by the organizations.

As a result of the conference, experts across the globe will develop a consensus statement to be published in the journal, Endocrine Practice.

“It’s clear that what we’ve been doing isn’t working,” Jeffrey I. Mechanick, MD, FACP, FACE, FACN, AACE president and director of metabolic support in the division of endocrinology, diabetes and bone disease and clinical professor of medicine at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said in the release. “We need to change the paradigm of current obesity management through cross-platform interactions and allow real-world idea and solutions to emerge.”

The AACE/ACE Consensus Conference on Obesity: Building an Evidence Base for Comprehensive Action will take place on March 23 and 24 in Washington, DC, according to the release. The consensus statement will be presented at a press conference on March 25.

Keynote speakers will include Patrice A. Harris, MD, of the American Medical Association Board of Trustees; John P. Foreyt, PhD, Director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Center at Baylor College of Medicine; and Lawrence A. Soler, CEO of the childhood obesity nonprofit, A Partnership for a Healthier America.

Obesity is a complex disease, influenced by innumerable factors,” Daniel Einhorn, MD, FACP, FACE, president of ACE, said in the release. “We must create our evidence base with as much relevant input and diverse data as possible from the many and varying entities involved in obesity prevention and treatment.”
