The North American-based transportation company, Coach USA, will implement a new medical protocol aimed at protecting the safety and disability rights of drivers with diabetes, according to a press release.

Coach USA will partner with the American Diabetes Association and AARP Foundation Litigation to develop and implement the new policy for its company’s drivers with diabetes.

“Central to the American Diabetes Association’s mission is the fair treatment of people with diabetes in employment. We commend Coach USA for adopting protocols that are based on current diabetes science and medicine,” John Anderson, MD, President of Science and Medicine at the American Diabetes Association, said in a press release.

In accordance with the new ‘Diabetes Protocol,’ drivers cannot be disqualified based on results of a single urine or blood glucose test. However, the policy will require those with diabetes to undergo tests to document their ability to drive safely, according to the press release.

Current federal motor carrier regulations indicate that drivers with type 2 diabetes are permitted to drive if their disease is managed by therapies other than insulin; and those who manage their diabetes with insulin are able to drive if they participate in a federal diabetes exemption program, according to the release.
