Scientific organizations release clinical practice guidelines on healthy eating

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American College of Endocrinology and The Obesity Society have released new clinical practice guidelines for healthy eating in the prevention of endocrine diseases in adults, according to a press release.

The guidelines are targeted for clinicians and other health care providers who regularly see patients for the prevention and management of endocrine and metabolic disorders in adults, such as diabetes.

“In issuing these guidelines, it is our intent to fill the medical gap that currently exists by defining evidence-based, necessary and specific clinical strategies for the prevention and treatment of a broad range of metabolic disorders in adults,” J. Michael Gonzalez-Campoy, MD, PhD, FACE, who co-chaired the guidelines committee, said in a press release. “These comprehensive recommendations effectively address patient standards of care while also providing a worthwhile framework for disease prevention.”

Some of the key components of the document include:

  • General recommendations for healthy eating and disease prevention;
  • Healthy macronutrient/micronutrient intake; and
  • Approaches for obese and/or overweight patients.

National recommendations currently appropriate for cardiovascular health, pregnancy and lactation, chronic kidney disease, bone health, and the elderly patient population are also addressed within the guidelines.
